Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. As an only girl She was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott was a student at an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. Scott was a student in secondary school as well as working two other job. She was hoping to become the high school's English teacher. Her dream to become a high-school English teacher, ended when she quit school. Her career began by singing live poetry and performing writing her own material. She eventually joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. During a Roots show she came out in the spotlight as an artist. After that, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. Also, she was the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
